Athletes of the Month

Each month MD recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate team work, drive,
determination & outstanding contribution to Mustangs Athletics.

October Athletes of the Month
Yusuf Butt - Jr. Boys Volleyball
Yusuf is deserving of this award for several reasons: he's always a positive presence for his teammates on the court and off, never saying anything negative, he embodies and models the qualities of good sportsmanship; he communicates with his teachers regarding games, as well as practices ("That's me!"); he was put in a new position (Libero) that he had never played before, placing himself everywhere his peers needed and even sacrificing his body for every point. Yusuf is the epitome of athlete of the month and he's a great example of why we, as teachers, coach sports.

Evan Taylor - Cross Country

Evan has been a pillar on the cross country team this year. He is always at practice with a positive attitude, and he has stepped up as an excellent leader to the novice students on the team. He has been running extremely well all season as well. Evan finished 4th in the junior boys race at GHAC and had a great race despite extremely poor conditions at OFSAA last weekend in Sudbury. Congratulations, Evan!

Zohair Zahid - Sr. Boys Volleyball
Zohair is a very talented setter - a position that is integral to a successful volleyball team. He works hard at practice and games to get to every ball and create opportunities for his teammates. He has a strong and consistent serve that is not easy to return, and knows where he needs to be on the court for every ball. Zohair communicates with his teammates well and has a positive attitude at practices and entering game situations. Way to go Zohair!

Ariel Lunshof - Senior Girls Basketball
Ariel is an absolute monster on defense as she attacks the boards every time and comes out successful with rebound after rebound. Her long limbs proved to be what the team needed as she was able to tip and intercept many passes leading to several fast breaks and scoring opportunities. Ariel is always a team member that shows up to practice with a positive attitude, her sportsmanship is admirable as she helps opponents up off the floor and her smile after scoring is the cherry on top of coaching Ariel. Ariel is overwhelming deserving of athlete of the month for her enormous efforts on the senior girls basketball team.

Will Merwin - Junior Football
No student in MDHS history has accounted for more touchdowns in a single football season than Will Merwin.
Will has thrown 11 touchdown passes and rushed for six touchdowns. He has had numerous two point conversions this season. In a recent game against T.A. Blakelock, Will came on in the second half and with one touch of the ball scored on a 45 yard touchdown run. He then led Milton to two more quick scores. It is quite clear that Will has had one of the single greatest seasons as a junior football Mustang.
