Athletes of the Month

Each month we recognize student athletes who demonstrate team work, drive,
determination & outstanding contribution to sports life at MD.

Congratulations to February Athletes of the month!

Shucayb Farah (Jr Basketball)

Shucayb was a leading scorer for the jr boys basketball team in January & February with multiple 20 & 30+ point performances. He scored 41 points in the Championship game of the Georgetown tournament, and was one of the team’s best rebounders. He helped the team clinch 3rd place in their division and to win their quarterfinal playoff game against White Oaks. Shucayb had a 36 point performance in the semifinals vs. Aldershot, but unfortunately the team came up just short in overtime. Congratulations Shucayb and good luck at sr next year!

Jackson Tovell (Bantam Basketball)

As a starter, Jackson is a key player this season on the Bantam Basketball team. His drive & determination has helped the team secure many wins. He's a leader & a great role model with his commitment & sportsmanship. The team heads into playoffs this week & Jackson will be a key player in the team’s Tier 2 Halton Championship run.

Katrina Kanbergs (Sr Volleyball)

A master of team development & position flexibility, Katrina has been a go to performer for the team all season. She brought strong leadership, extreme skill, dependability and multi-position abilities. She lead the team in kills, had the highest accuracy passing percentage, and a deadly float serve. A contagious smile, fierce competitor, refuse to lose mentality, and hit the floor defence, means Katrina will be next to impossible to replace next year! An absolute pleasure to coach and a treat to watch compete!

Zoe Tsiapalis (Jr Volleyball)

With the end of the season and playoffs surrounding February, Zoe's demonstrated her strength as a quiet leader on the court. Her strong setting skills allowed the team’s hitters to attack aggressively and often. She complimented this play with powerful serving and some timely blocking. Zoe helped lead the team to the Tier 1 Semifinals with her consistent play & positive attitude. Zoe is an ideal example of the Mustangs student-athlete, exemplifying her hard work both in the classroom and on the court.

Emily Smith (Swimming)

Emily is a key member of the Mustangs Swim Team this year. Last week at the GHAC Championship, Emily placed 1st in the open 100 fly & 2nd in the open 100 free. She also lead the open 200 medley relay & 400 free relay to top 10 finishes & qualified for OFSAA. Emily, best of luck at OFSAA next week. Your expertise, determination & skill make you a fierce competitor!

Andrew Knaggs (Swimming)

Andrew is having a very successful season this year. As a senior student & high level swimmer, Andrew approaches each race with determination & focus. Last week at the GHAC championship he placed 3rd in the open 100 fly & 2nd in the open 100 free. This will be a repeat OFSAA appearance for Andrew. Best of luck next week!

Justin Palmer (Swimming)

Justin has proven just how great a swimmer he is this season. He moved up to the senior level and has still secured a spot to represent MD at OFSAA. He placed 2nd in the senior 50 fly last week at the GHAC championship, and just missed the qualifying time for the 50 free. His experience, focus & calm demeanour has directly resulted in his success. Best of luck next week at OFSAA!
