Optional Attendance

The Halton District School Board encourages students to attend the school designated for families in their area.  The Board does, however, provide the opportunity to students who are residents in the Halton region, to apply for enrolment in a Halton school outside their regular school attendance area, where there are sufficient pupil places to accommodate them.  This is called Optional Attendance.

Secondary Optional Attendance has two distinct processes:  Students in Grade 8 moving into Grade 9; and, Students in Grades 9 to 12.

Application for Optional Attendance - Grade 8 into Grade 9
Students and families are expected to discuss the programs offered at their designated home school with the Principal of that school.  If the decision is made to make an Optional Attendance request, parents are required to complete the Optional Attendance Gr. 8 to Gr. 9 form and submit it to the Principal at the home school.   

Timelines for Optional Attendance Requests
Optional Attendance requests must be returned to the Principal of the home school prior to the second week of February.  The Principal may wish to consult with families directly regarding the application.  Decisions will be forwarded to applicants in the first week of March; however, some decisions may be held pending confirmation of enrolment numbers.

All Optional Attendance requests granted are for one year only.  The decisions may be renewed annually at the discretion of the Principal, in consideration of the school's projected enrolment and the availability of pupil places.

Application for Optional Attendance - Grades 9 to 12
The process for application for Optional Attendance for Grades 9 to 12 occurs through the home school Principal and the Principal of the requested school.  This may be initiated by parents or guardians at any time of the year and requires the approval of both Principals.  The process can be initiated through informal means, such as a meeting, email or phone call, and does not require a formal application process.  The process must be initiated at the home school.

Transportation is not provided for students who are accepted under Optional Attendance.  It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure the student(s) arrive at school on time and are picked up at the end of the day.
