English Language Learners
Who is the English Language Learner?
English Language Learners (ELLs) are students whose first language is a language other than English. This includes a variety of English that is significantly different from the language of instruction in Ontario's schools.
These students may be Canadian born or have arrived here from other countries. They come from diverse backgrounds and school experiences, and have a wide variety of strengths and needs. All may require focused educational supports to assist them in attaining proficiency in English.
