English

The English Program offers compulsory courses in grades 9 through 12 with an emphasis on developing student competencies in oral communication, media literacy, reading & literature studies, and writing. In their senior years, students can pursue special interests in optional courses such as Media, Studies in Literature, and the Writer's Craft.

A key curriculum focus at Milton is Education for Reconciliation.  As an educational institution, Milton has an important role to play in the journey together to reconcile relationships with Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and we support the view expressed by the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair in the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2015):  "Much of the current state of troubled relations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians in attributable to educational institutions and what they have taught, or failed to teach, over many generations.  Despite that history, or perhaps more correctly, because of it's potential, the Commission believes that education is also the key to reconciliation."

In response to the TRC's "Calls to Action", specifically, 62), 63), 64), Milton District has undertaken a process for building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.  Students in the Gr. 11 English:  Contemporary Indigenous Voices course read award-winning fiction and non-fiction texts written by Joseph Boyden, Richard Wagamese, Thomas King and Drew Hayden Taylor.  Course concepts and skills are reinforced through rich and varied experiential learning opoportunties, including class visits by Indigenous knowledge holders and excursions to art galleries, cultural centres, the Mohawk Institute/Woodland Centre, Grand River Rafting, Camp Kawartha, the Canadian Canoe Museum, Curve Lake, and Kinomagewapkong/Petroglyphs Provincial Park in Peterborough, Ontario.
