Community Hours

Since September 1, 1999, every student who begins secondary school in Ontario is required to complete 40 hours of community involvement in order to receive their secondary school diploma. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community and to help them develop a greater sense of belonging within the community.   Students may begin to accumulate volunteer hours in the summer between Grade 8 & Grade 9.

If your student is still having difficulty finding options to obtain these hours, we encourage a connection with the Guidance Counselor, or check out the links below.

Why community hours?

Community hours encourages awareness of civic responsibility, and gives the students opportunities to make valuable contributions to their communities.   Requirements for time to be counted as community hours:

Hours must be completed outside of class time

Hours must not be part of a credit course

Hours must be unpaid activities

Hours must be completed by end of Grade 12
